My 14 y/o Bichon started coughing this morning. It sounds like a dry heave, but sometimes she manages to get up some white phlem stuff. What is wrong with her?

I just wanted to mention here that she has been very well taken care of her entire life and has had all shots and such. Up until this morning she seemed to be a healthy, happy older dog.

has she been around any strange dogs recently? She could have picked up kennel cough. If not, at her age it could be heart disease, I would take her to the vet asap and get her diagnosed and there is mediciine to help her.

She may have swallowed something she shouldn't or eating something she shouldn't or beginning of lung, heart etc disease-the only way to determine is to take the dog to the VET go to www.vetmed.wsu.eda/clientED/cough.asp for all the reasons for dogs to cough and the white stuff is not comparable to people phlegm for am sure its more frothy than snotty like phlegm.Could even be somehing simple as drinking water too fast but doubt esp if shes been doing since morning- I would call my VET for the office answering machine will have a Emergency No and I would call -usually someone calls within a hour and then they can advise if OK to wait until the Morning or take to Emergency Clinic right away and they will advise where you can go or look in the yellow pages for nearest animal emergency clinic near you. I'd also if OK to wait till the AM if you should withold food esp if she has something lodged . You can call the 24 animal emergency clinic and ask them for advice which they will give over the phone. Wish you luck

I have a 5 month old yorkie and when I first brought him home from the petstore, they said that a change in environment, being in an enclosed area with other dogs, or even being around a dog that is sick can cause an infection known as Canine Cough. Its an infection that is similar to the human cold. My vet told me that it just needs to run its course through my pet's body. They gave me antibiotics to help alleve the cough but within 2 weeks it was completely gone.
