If he lived with you ALL year, you paid over half of his support, he had under $3300 gross income, and nobody can claim him as a qualifying child, then you can claim him as a dependent. But you can't file as head of household based on him being a dependent - a person must be closely related, as well as meeting other rules, to qualify you for filing as head of household.

No. Even if you can claim him as a dependent, he is not a "qualifying person" for Head of Household filing status.

"loandude" is wrong. You do NOT need to be related to someone to claim them as a dependent. The rules are pretty strict, but a blood or familial relationship isn't one of them to be considered a "qualifying relative."

In 2006 you could not claim him as a dependent. He is not related by blood or marraige. He would not be a qualifying relative either.
To claim HH, you need a qualifying dependent.
