Firstly, Heathrow has a tube station so you can buy one there no problem.
You can either pay as you go or get a season ticket. Seson tickets last 7 days or 1 month.
You can put anything up to £100 at one go on it but you wont need to....

www.tfl.gov.uk will give you all the correct info but here is some to start off:

As to which option, it all depends on why you are here. If you are touring heavily, planning to use the tube several times a day, buy a season ticket.

A single tube journey in Zone 1 (Central London) is £1.50 on oyster. A daily travelcard is about £5. Once you fares reach £5 for the day (bus or tube) it will stop charging you.

A 7 day season ticket is about £20. A monthly is about £60.

I dont know the exact figures cos I only have a zone 2&3 monthly which is £53.

Oh, whatever tube zone you got, you can still use any bus all over London.

Sorry if this answer is long, but the oyster system is confusing at times even to us locals!!

Yes you can get a pay-as-you-go Oyster card at Heathrow. You fill out a form (doesn't take long) and pay a deposit of £3.

If you're here as a tourist, a weekly or monthly card will be better if you're going to do a lot of travelling, but think about WHERE you are likely to travel...no point buying a zones 1-6 card (what you'd need to leave Heathrow) if you're only going to be in zones 1-2 for the month. If you will mostly be in zones 1-2, get a single ticket to wherever you are going and then sort out a card next day.

If you get a Pay As You Go card, I suggest that you just put £20 on it to start and see how much you're using it - it's easy enough to top up.

You should have put "Oyster Cards", in your question to avoid the confusion with the shellfish that I love so much. With regard to your travel dilemma, I'm not really the right person to give advice.I hope someone out there has a useful answer for you. Best of luck.

if you use your oyster card be aware some br companys dont take it so you may get a fine also if you use it a lot in one day you only pay the same as a one day travel card eg use it twice on pay as you go £2 if you use it a lot of times on the same day it will cost the same as a travel card depending on what zone you are in you can pay as much as you want and you can give it to someone else to use in the future also it lasts for years

Pay as you go would be the best bet. Start off by putting at least £20 on it and whenever you use it, it will tell you how much credit you have remaining.

When you get low just 'top up' again.
