If you are really interested in gettting a better camera, I would reccomend a Canon. Some good ones are the Rebel XT and the D30. The rebel is less expensive, but still a very good camera. I would also reccomend getting a Canon lens because the lens that comes with the rebel is just alright.

You can check out the Canon digital rebel and Nikon D50 as well. You might also go to keh.com and look for used equipment which will stretch your dollar. If you've been using a less capable camera, than you realize that it is the photographer that makes the difference between good and bad. While equipment has a purpose, you are what counts, and so an entry level DSLR will do.

One word of caution on the D40, it has no internal focus motor, so there are only certain Nikon lenses that will work for auto-focus. While the price is right, you might look at something with a bit more capability. Good luck!.

When you do decide go to this website. There are some awsome deals on Digi SLR kits. I just bought mine. And get an extended warrenty. You can find deals on them on ebay.
