The philosophy of what's "good" and "bad" has always existed, and I think it's really interesting that you're asking why. We are told that the media twists reality and distorts the image of a healthy body and that it's "bad", but we don't really know why, and dietics and physiologists everywhere are constantly telling us to be healthy and thin at the same time.
What I find more interesting, is that media does flaunt fit-appearing, and rather eye-appealing models, and really that's what we are told that is healthy. Not necessarily thin, but we are told that we shouldn't have extra weight or be inactive people. And there's nothing wrong with being beautiful and physically fit. But the FDA, ACE, and all those organizations tell us that it's the media's WAY of saying people should be thin that is completely wrong.
But you have to think, logically, that there are people naturally thin, naturally fit, naturally prone to take advantage of exercise and food benefits.
Media isn't the direct reason why people have eating disorders, I think. It's more of society and your personal view of who you are. If we liked meaty, fat people on our magazine covers, everyone would want to get fat. If society said that having no physical abilities, being inactive, and sitting on the couch all day was the new Barbie-physique, then most people would want to be that way. If being unhealthly and obese was the "pretty" thing, then everyone on this board would want advice on how to gain weight the fastest.
It's human-nature to compare and evaluate ourselves to other people. We can't help it, many people can't. And believe me, I'm not sticking it out for the media or the seventy-pound fashion models, they certainly have a chunk in this, but I think we put more blame on them then what we can simply accept that WE do.
If people understood that it was the model's JOB to be pretty and attractive looking, then low self-esteem related to body image, weight issues, and eating disorders would be slim to none.
But we don't.
I'm sure the people reading this are probably wanting to throw something at me for saying such a thing, and sure, other factors are involved, but truly, the media isn't our gateway through the world. Society and the personal expections we put in the world, come out through the media.
We are stuck between the healthy and beautiful, and for most, it's hard to tell a difference. But I think it'll always be a problem, as long as we have television and we have the drive to compare, it'll always exist. And we have to be intelligent enough to understand that we can't look into other people's views all the time to find the answer; that we have to make decisions and judgements based upon how we feel and our experience. We always ask, judge, and infer and think based upon scientists, priests, and friends to make up our own opinions. Not saying gathering information or opening yourself is wrong, but when have people actually decided for themselves on what is "okay" and "not okay"?
I appalade you for this question. Thanks. :)

Well, a lot of people would argue that there's a great amount of pressure on most specifically young women to live up to what is portrayed as the social ideal (ie. thin women). And so, as a result this is thought to be a major factor in people taking unhealthy steps to lose an unrealistic amount of weight.
Who's to say whether it's bad or not? I think that having models who are thin to an extent that is clearly unhealthy is a bad example to set. Fashion models are often considered to be the example of what is beautiful. Again, I don't think this is necessarily true or not but that's the popular ideal.
Being thin isn't bad, being at a bodyweight which is too low for your height is. I don't think that very many guys actually find ultra skinny women that appealing but that's the ideal set by the media in a lot of cases.
So overall, I think that having a physical ideal that is unrealistic for most people and furthermore unhealthy isn't a good thing. I think that the steps taken by some European fashion shows to not permit models with a BMI that is considered unhealthy to step out on the catwalk is a positive step.
Some people are very impressionable.

Not true. The media gives you what they think you want. People with no reason to live like to watch tv, especially stories about outlaws and maverics. The media gives them that and they want to be like the hero of the story. Don't blame the media, blame the culture. Kids now are being raised and educated by vietnam draft dodgers, and see people get rich by sueing someone. that is just part of it. Sorry I misread the question, but I beleive what I said
It is not just the media pressuring people to be thin. Did you ever see a hundred year old fat person. God doesn't want you to be a glutton.

The media's pressure to be thin creates an environment where fat people are considered subhuman. It also creates an environment where appearance is valued much more highly than things like integrity, loyalty, trust, and love.

Its the equivalent purpose why childrens born into cults have hassle breaking unfastened: they are bombarded with those lies as a results of fact the 2d they are born. Pscyhology proves that if persons frequently permit you recognize in spite of, you will ultimately think of it whether or no longer that's a lie or now no longer. infants are too youthful to hold close perfect from flawed, so as that they are forced to enhance up in it. and that they are extra effected by way of it, provided that childrem somewhat in many situations think of adults are perfect. no person blames adult men for the media. human beings blame the persons interior the back of the commercials whether or no longer they are male or female. women are bombared plenty extra advantageous than adult men. Now you are going to show that's now no longer unquestionably(you reported it on your very final submit), in spite of the incontrovertible fact that that's. Now, in case you desire to finally finally end up me flawed, heres how: Make a record of the full manufacturers that purpose mens insecurities. Make a record of the full manufacturers that tell adult men they could desire to be masculine, and manly and that i visit make a record for women. Who-ever gets the longest record wins. ok? If making a variety to no longer do it, i visit take that as a results of fact the certainty you already know i'm perfect.... -------- EDIT: ahhhhh, so as which you admit that the media targest women extra! final submit, you saved seeking to cajole me that adult men have been targetted further. Why did you distinction your strategies without notice? women purchase makeup comparable to adult men purchase fitness center memberships and weights. the purpose interior the back of ladies determining to purchase makeup isn't consistently approximately seeking to be style-like. in simple terms like how adult men who purchase fitness center memberships are not consistently doing it to be like between the main adult men on the T.V with the 6packs. The media is going to place extra commercials out for women on the subject of elegance merchandise, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that the catch 22 situation is: they could desire to now no longer feed off the insecurities of ladies to accomplish that.

because people are easily convinced that they need to be thin to be accepted in society and because the need to be thin grows so bad that people start being anorexic and bulimic and die from a heart attack
