I was given a cup of batter and a recipe. Do I use the batter to bake the bread or start from day one of the recipe and follow the instructions?

You need to follow the instructions.

As I recall you take 1 cup of the batter given you to make your own loaf of bread and use the other cup as starter to keep the starter going. You can then divide the starter on the last day and share it or simply make double the amount of bread and reserve a cup of starter to keep alive. Hint: The bread freezes well so if you start to get tired of it, make it now and freeze for later.

Have fun with it and share the wealth! Yummy!!
