I had this problem with my dog when she was a puppy and I read somewhere that they do this because of a lack of a mineral in their diet. An article I read that was written by a dog trainer suggested adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin to the dog's food or just plop it on a dish and give it to him. I did this and she stopped digging after about a week! She loved the pumpkin too. Make sure you get the canned pumpkin that says 100% pure pumpkin -- DON'T get the canned pumpkin pie filling. They are often next to each on the same shelf in the grocery store, so look carefully. Good luck!

Every breed has certain traits that will always be a part of that dog....Terriers were bred to dig and catch vermin underground. If your dog is a terrier, you probably will not completely stop your dog from digging because this is part of what a terrier does. Try to exercise the dog more and stimulate the dogs mind, chances are the dog has nothing better to do...Good luck.

Catch the dog in the act and sternly say no. A dog doesn't understand all your words...by demonstrating him digging (actually move his legs in the area you found him digging) and firmly saying no continuously while doing it.
You can't punish a pet by saying bad dog when you find the holes. The dog hasn't a clue why you are calling/yelling at him he doesn't know what "don't dig" means....the word dig means nothing to him.

If you're afraid of your dog digging OUT, we used to bury large rocks and bricks around the inside of the fence, so when he'd dig, he'd hit one of the rocks and stop.
If not, the only thing to do is catch him in the act and scold him. Keep on him -- It'll take some time for him to learn. Also, give him lots of toys. This will occupy him and he won't think about digging.

Get a small children's swimming pool...the cheap plastic kind. Fill it with sand and then bury milk bones in the sand. Show your dog that you are burying one of these and encourage him to dig it up. Eventually he'll get the idea that his little sand box is the only place he'll dig up treats and that's the only place he'll want to dig. Your dog gets to keep digging and your dad is happy because the lawn isn't torn up. :o)

Digging is a natural thing for dogs. You need to get an area in your yard for him to dig. And only let him dig in that area. And no where else.

sounds kind of gross;but if you bury your dog's droppings in the holes he has dug- when he tries to dig again he will smell his waste and stop digging.
If he is digging in one area there is a product called Stay Off of my Garden-spray it on the areas you don't want him to dig-he will stay away from that area. It's available at most pet supply stores. I have raised terriers for 40 years-they love to dig;but the dropping method worked for us.

Ok, this will sound gross, but put your dog's feces in the hole thiat is dug and bury it. When the dog goes to dig again, it will stop when it reaches the feces. It takes a few days, but it is a safe, humane way to stop the digging, and you are filling in the holes.

They usually dig because they are feeling ignored and any attention to them is "good attention", in otherwords teh more fuss you make the more th dog is rewarded. I just bury their poop in the hole and they won't dig there again. Big dogs, like German Shepherd, quite often will dig a hole to lay in to stay cool, in which case you just have to let them have their favorite "hole"..
