The only expenses allowed to be used for the education credits or the education deduction are Tuition and Fees. Books are only eligible if they are required to be purchased at the school.

If your son is a full time student, his tuition alone will probably max out the credit or the deduction.

No you can't. Only tuition and fees are eligible expenses for education credits, not room and board whether on-campus or off. And there is nothing in the tax code to allow you to deduct room and board either.
