we are best friends in high school!
and he has always been a good friend to me... he even called me beautiful...
when i told him on the instant messenger that I think that after 8 years i don't think that we would know each other, he replied..
"thats sad... i want to cry"
Is there a chance that because he wants to know me in 8 years that perhaps he likes me more than a friend?

Most likely not. Think about it--if one of your female friends--ur best female friend told you that you two may not know each other, wouldn't your reaction be also one of sadness? Now, if you are sad at the prospect of not losing your best female friend 8 years from now, does that mean you like her more than a friend? Most likely not.
He's sad because he values your friendship with him. it means that your friendship is important to him and he regards you as someone he can share with--qualities of a friend. Hence, not knowing you later in life makes him sad--not because he likes you romantically, but because he values your friendship (which is probably more important, especially in the long run anyways)!

I think that his response can only be interpreted by you. you know him best. was it a said in a joking manner or in a more heart felt way?
it sounds that he may have deeper feelings for you beyond just a friendship. But on the other hand, do not rush into any conclusions because eight years is long time and people change.

Yes and you must also like him as more than a friend maybe you should tell him how you feel and see what he has to say you may be surprised. The best relationships are ones that start with a deep friendship

I would be hurt too if my best friend said he didn't think we knew each other. There is always a possibility that a friend (especially opposite sex) could have feelings for each other. Just don't assume he does. Ask a subtle question, like a "what if" quetion. He may just think of you as a close confidant.

I think he cares a lot for you. It might not be love at this point though. If you want more than friendship, you need to talk to him. No one wants to lose a long time friend. You didn't say why you said that to him. Was it to find out if he loved you?

He's your best friend...of course he would be sad.
That doesn't mean he is like in love with you.
I'm sure he loves you, just not in a boyfriend girlfriend type way...just a friend way.
