The easy answer is - no way, they all stink. Yet not all smokers are total losers.

If Arnold Schwarzenegger or Bill Clinton or Barack Obama came to my door I would probably let them in, counting on them to step outside if they want to light up. So maybe I would hold my nose and cut them some slack.

But most people smoke cigarettes, which stink worse than cigars, and the dirty odor clings to their clothes, their bodies, their hair, and their breath. So they would be told to leave.

The foulest smelling cigarettes are IMHO the menthol ones, and no way would I tolerate a Salem junkie around my property.

What's your position?

Yes, I would allow a smoker in my apartment, but if they want to smoke they have to do it outside and away from the entrance and also dispose of the finished stub appropriately. They do stink and I know that because I used to smoke for over 24 years and am reformed. A while after I stopped smoking and my olfactory senses started working normally again I happened to step into an elevator with a smoker and I was surprised how bad that person stunk and I thought to myself, "Oh my goodness, and I stunk like for all that time!"

But anyway, I definitely wouldn't turn away a friend or family member just because they smoked. They just need to respect my need for a clean smelling apartment. There are many smokers here in my building where I rent and they aren't allowed to smoke in the halls, but when the door to their apartment is open and smoke comes out it does drift down the hall and creeps into every apartment at that moment. After not smoking for 14 years that is not a pleasant smell. So I have a small carpet that I roll up against the door so I don't have to smell that crap.

People are surprised when I tell them I'm a smoker. That's cause I'm a "quite" one. I don't chain smoke and NEVER do it indoors, whether it's my home or not. Because I don't like the ashtray smell. Probably not making any sense to you, I know. It's a habit I wish I didn't have. Cause it does stink. So, to make sure I don't stink like, I never smoke in my coat, always pull back my sleeves and I make sure I'm not in someone Else's line of smoke. Then I give my hands and arms a good scrubbing and drink some water and pop in some gum or a mint.
So, this smoker doesn't stink.

No I would not. Even if it were my own family I would tell them know. I had ashtma in my childhod and it is aggravated by cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke clings to clothes, furniture, and everything. It would be almost impossible to get the smell out. No way would I compromise my health or the health of my family for someone who is a nicotine addict. And by the way I would never let Bill Clinton in my house anyway.

I would allow the person to visit. If they have to smoke they can go outside but I always tell them to be sure and take your butts with you. Actually there was a study done and the results were that smokers are in the minority.

I hear you. I hate cigarette smoke. Amazingly, I have known some people who do do not smell like smoke at all, and I'm surprised when they say they smoke. I can't figure it out. Others smell like smoke stacks!! These people I wouldn't let in b/c they will leave the smoke odor all over your house!

I am a smoker, I don't smoke in my house.
Okay, I get it when you say it clings to our hair, clothes, etc...but if you chose people you have on your property like that, I assume, you also don't let people in who have foul body odor, eat garlic or onions a lot, use the wrong perfume in your eyes, wrong shampoo etc...sorry, you must really be a lonely kind of person!

I am an avid cigar smoker aqnd enthusiast and I know alot of people who do not care who they are around when they smoke. I am very conscious of who I am around and where I am when I smoke. I don't smoke pot or cigarettes and I hate it when people do it around me without asking me if it bothers me. I smoke with the utmost consideration of others and I believe all smokers should. It is our hobby why should we push it on others.

I would let smokers in, but I would tell them to smoke outside. I know that their clothes may smell like smoke, but I won't have to deal with them for long. None of my close friends smoke anyways; so, I don't have to deal with this.

I don't allow smoking in my apartment. Period. I've been known to ask guests to step outside to light up even in the middle of December!

As long as the smoker in question is willing to obey the "not in my apartment" rule, that's fine.

I will allow a smoker in my home, but as the mother of a child with asthma, they would be required to smoke outside and away from the entrance of my home. I make sure that all who enter my home know this beforehand.
