Best advice is to follow the directions for thinning and cleanup that appear on the can. Too much thinning, or thinning with the wrong thinner can easily cause the paint components to seperate which results in severe streaking. I learned this the hard way when I used too much water to thin out some latex paint in an effort to stretch the paint to complete a job. Needless to say, I had to repaint.

Good luck with your paint project.

Why would you want to dilute the paint? It's made the way it is because millions of dollars have been spent researching the best "mix". If you thin it you might need two coats to cover and you would be using more paint. If you're shooting it through a gun, turn up the pressure or use a bigger tip. If you really want to put something in it use "Flotrol". It will thin the paint a bit and help it go on smoothly.
PS. You can tell what to thin paint with by what you use to clean your brush. Latex/acrylic = water, oil = mineral spirits, Lacquer = lacquer thinner, etc.
