No not to find out if you are pregnant but there are a few reason why seeing a Dr at least once is a good idea. Placenta Previa is a condition where the placenta lies at the bottom of the cervix and does not move up the side of the uterus as the pregnancy progresses. There is no way to tell if you have this condition other than an ultrasound. This condition could be minor or serious enough to cause you to hemorrhage. You will also want to know if you are carrying multiples. It won't hurt to go once once to be safe and then proceed with your mid-wife, unless your midwife will do an ultrasound for you than I think you can skip the Dr and allow her to handle it. Good Luck and I hope you have a wonderful, beautiful birth.

Well, with all of my pregnancies, they did a bloodtest at the office even though I told them my home preg. test were positive and I haven't had my period. They might not do it and do a pelvic exam first with an ultrasound, depending on how far along you are. I would call the midwife and ask what you should do in case they have certain regulations. Then make the appointment.

A midwife is equipped with the same obstetrical pregnancy care skills as an md, and will be able to ascertain from a urine test, or even uterine palpation and visual exam of the cervix whether or not you are pregnant. Sometimes, insurance plans require that your regular general practitioner does an initial exam complete with a blood pregnancy test, but that varies. you should check with your plan on what to do.

If the HPT was positive, then go ahead and make the appt. My OB's office uses the old pee-on-a-stick method to confirm, and they told me their tests aren't as sensitive as the new ones on the market. The midwife would probably have you go for bloodwork anyways to check for hepatitis, basic levels, etc.

I went to the doctor for confermation before my first midwife appointment. I kinda think it was silly since all they did was a urine test. But It was nice to go to the doc and get the yes you are pregnant. It reasures you that you didnt screw up. I think its good to when you call for your first appointment, they ask you how far along you are, so you can let them know, because the doc will tell you. It is up to you though, if you dont want to,I dont think it will matter.

With both my pregnancies, I was tested when I went for my first pre-natal exam. Positive HPT's are very accurate and many doctors and midwives will just hold off a confirmation test until that first exam.

You don't need to in most cases. If your home pregnancy test came back 'positive', you can call the midwife directly to set up the first appointment.

i would because even though it is very rare, some pregnancy tests are wrong. i would go to a doctor, because if you werent pregnant and you book a midwife, you will feel really stupid.
