ok so i was at a store n this guy was packing my groceries. n i was leaving n he said: have a great nite. n i didnt say anytihng back....i mean he said it in a really low voice n he looked down when he said it. n i guess i didnt catch it . i feel really bad bout it now =(

Well YES! I don't think it is a guy question but IMO for guys it is more so than gals because are not normally chatter boxes (I said normally). Think of it the other way around if someone said hi and they did not respond would you be alright with it? What if it happen 100 times? For guys it happens a lot. He just said have a great nite. The answer expected is "thanks". Even better "thanks, you have a great night also". Wow that was sooooo hard. I know it was ridiculous for the guy to ask you for so much. That mount of time, the effort, privacy, the commitment. Crap it takes only 1 maybe 2 seconds and you do not even have to stop to do it. Heck yea it is VERY rude. You acknowledging he exist after all he just said something nice to you. And yes, you did catch it (this question would not be here otherwise) and did ignore it as a reflex. People that are not rude (or people trained to be hospitable) would answer it without thinking about it.
But don't beat yourself for it just train yourself to be nice instead and to respond. It is not like he said: "hey woman, what is your number?" or "would you like to jump me right here right now?" . Ignoring that would wise and appreciated by society in general.

It was a guy at the store! Do you think he really cares? Do you know how many people have done that to him already? When they're not in a good mood, in a rush? Or what about people that get pissed off at the store for stupid policies? It doesn't matter. Maybe next time...

You think it is rude, right? And I think that is good you knew it is rude. I don't think it is that rude, but I think we should say back to the person who says Thank You to us.
It is much better than thinking like, You are working here and am a customer, and why I need to say back Thank you?
