I'm 16 turning 17. Whilst reminiscing in my room the other day, I realized that I hadn't accomplished much up to this point. That's when I decided that I'd like to pick up guitar, singing, acting, dancing, or something to occupy my time with... Do you think it would be too late in the game to take up one of these hobbies? Namely, singing because I'd like to conjoin in with guitar.

Virtually any and all responses are appreciated! Try not to flame...

no, it is definately not too late to learn to sing! i am a uni student now, and looking back i would love to have taken up acting/dancing lessons, so i totally understand your thinking... seriously, you should definately start singing lessons, because if you dont do it now you will probably never get around to doing it, it will be one of those "one day i will.." things. not that there is a time limit on singing or anything, but if i were you i would start them while still in high school. dont be like me, and not take up the oppertunities you have in your highschool yrs...
if by "too late" you mean you are worried that you will be way behind the standard of others of your age, don't stress! everyone achieves at different rates, and you will probably find that you pick up the correct technique alot faster than you would have if you were, say, 13. there are no time limits on how good a person can become (as is proved by singer jojo - she came into her talent in a very short time, starting her professional career at around 13), and you still have a good 5 or so years until your voice is properly mature.

If you are just coming 17 it's the right time for you to start singing lessons. Unlike the other musical disciplines, like violin, where the sooner the better applies, this is not true for the voice. Your body is nearing the end of your final growth, and is reaching that point of maturity where singing becomes achievable. I'm not disparaging all those teen wonders out there, but opera singers are a different thing. We don't rely on mikes or electronic equipment to enhance our voices, we are the enhancement. That takes a certain amount of physical maturity. During puberty, most obviously for the men, the whole larynx undergoes the same transformation as the rest of the body. Some men , going from boy soprano to bass, can double in size.. ( that's only the larynx, it doesn't necessarily apply to the rest of the body, so calm down)
Until that growth is finished, it's senseless to over strain the equipment. You wouldn't ask a 17-yr-old to be able to take on the big weights, he'd have to start with the 5kg ones and work up gradually.
We women, can start up as early as 15, depending on our growth cycle. We don't double the vocal apparatus size, we increase by max 30% which is why we stay higher in pitch than the men.
By all means take lessons. Take the time and find someone who's good. If they promise you the moon and the stars ( 5 octaves in 5 weeks) stay away. If they are willing to custom fit their methods to your voice, go for it. If they want to squeeze you into their mold, run away. The most expensive are also not necessarily the best, they probably make a good living out of it...
Best wishes and keep on singing

With you being only 17 its certainly not too late. If you cant sing its not much you can do about that. But if you think you have a little talent you can try to get a singing coach and see if they can bring out the best in your voice. As they say, "practice makes perfect." As for acting and dancing as long as you can get in front of people and perform without being embarrassed then you are definitely do it. Acting and dancing classes will help, but if you don't have the money or time it cant hurt to do a little of both in front of the mirror.

It is never too late (unless your vocal chords have been ripped out) it's just that you will probably never be as good as those who have been singing since they were little.
