He is sitting on the bottom of the cage and when we tried to see what happend he flew badly up the the top of the cage and we saw that it had a twisted toe. My dad cut it's nails and we put its food to the bottom and and cleaned the bottom so he is sitting there and the vets can't take him we checked. What are we to do?

What do you mean that the vets can't take him? When did your Dad cut his toenails? Before or after you noticed his foot? If it was after, he may have cut too far into the quick. Birds have a blood flow to their nails just like us. If they have light nails, you can see where the vein ends and not cut there. I am so leary of mine, it HURTS them for one thing, just as if you cut yours into the quick and it bled. They will favor it for awhile, but a cut toenail, if not stopped bleeding is dangerous. Anything on a bird that bleeds is dangerous and must be taken care of immediately. They have a product in the pet store called blood stop, and some named differently, the steptic pencil never worked for me. The more you fool with the bird, IF it is bleeding, the more it will bleed with it trying to get away, if it keeps bleeding, he will bleed to death. Cockatiels, I don't know about the smaller ones, only have 15 cc's of blood in their whole body, so you see why it is dangerous for them to lose any blood.

Now, how do you know he hurt his leg for sure? Your question was not quite clear to me. If it is twisted, you have to get him to an Avian vet and they will put a splint on it, or at least tell you what he can do or not do. Birds that hurt their feet and don't get attention, will be afflicted for the rest of his life and may make him get around funny IF it heals. Avian vets are hard to find, I don't live in a very small town, but we have a lot of vets, but NO avian vets. I don't know what I would do if something happened to my parrots, I know I would do the best I could do and then take he/her to the nearest town that has one, and that is 35 miles away. It isn't that expensive. More than you paid for the bird, but they are so smart! I don't care how much money it would take for mine, I would have it fixed. They are little people too, with big feelings and can't tell us about it. Did a dog get to it or what? Also if you have a cat, they can catch the bird by their paw and if gotten ahold of, pull the bird so hard that it kills the bird and imbedds it in the cage bars. That happened to me once and I was so sad. I hope your little bird gets along ok and you can contact me at: Smokeygirl49@yahoo.com
