1) Current conditions on water- what are the fish doing? Spawn, post-spawn, summer, fall pattern etc.
2) Local facilities- Launch ramps, good resorts/bait shops/tackle stores. Best places to get information.
3) Lodging- hotels and camp grounds. Provide a way to make reservations.
4) Contact with good guides in the area.

That would be the most usefull.

Weather would have to be number one. If the weather sucks, it's hard to have a fun time no matter how good the bite is.

Other than that, all the things the others have posted: what's biting and where, what they're biting on, how big the fish are (actual size, not the fish tales you often get from some sources), and then the "traffic reports": if some area is closed for some reason, or if there are so many other people fishing a spot that it's a zoo.

It's often also useful to get detailed reports from where the fish aren't being taken, so you might be able to decide whether it's worth a trip anyway. Basically, the more info available, the better choice you can make about where to go and what to try.

One problem I had in the past with some published reports was that the reporter is trying to sell something -- a particular brand of lure or bait or whatever. Once that kind of crap gets out, the source loses credibility.

I suppose i'd like to know the generals about the weather, what temp it is now, what it will be and what the fishing conditions are. Maybe some information on whats been caught in the last few days. The area I fish in has plenty of rainbow and brown trout but also enough of the carp :( Some walleye and even some kokanee.

The main things I ask around for when fishing in a new spot are what type of fish have people been catching, what type of bait has been working best and on what type of rig, what depth have they been caught at, at what locations, condition of the water (ie, clarity, temperature, etc.). If using a boat, I always ask what kind of structures are in the lake and where they are located at.
