I use a Braun Silk-Epil, and love it. I even use it on my underarms and bikini area without any problems. it just takes some getting used to the sensation.

Courtney made many great suggestions. It will take two to four times for your body to get used to epilating. After that, it's just a little tuggiing that's hardly noticeable.
In the meantime, just do small sections at a time, then take a short break. When I first started epilating I would spray my legs with Dermoplast after I was done. It's a pain relieving spray that really helped.
Just bear with it for a little while. You'll love the results.

I used an epilady all the time a few years ago. The best ways to ease the pain are to take a hot shower and exfoliate first. The steam opens pores and allows the hair to come out easier. Exfoliating gets the dry dead skin out of the way. The more you do it the less it hurts.

you could try soaking in a hot bath this will open up the hair follicles, please note that on some people these appliances can cause really bad ingrown hairs because the root of the hair is twisted and disturbed in such a way that the hair then doesnt no which direction to grow in this doesnt happed to every one though.
