I'm not clear on the way people feed them this. Do you feed this to them every other day, or just occasionally, and as a treat? And, do you give them an entire spray at a time, and leave it in the cage, or do you cut 2 inches for them at a time?

I use it as an occasional treat, and most others I know do the same. It's very much loved with many birds, so it works as a great incentive for behaving. While millet does categorize as seed, it's more nutritious and has less fat than other loved seeds, like sunflower seeds. I take one little "pocket" of seeds at a time to feed to each one of my birds (small birds - lovebirds) for doing something good or just as a random treat.

I tend to feed it by hand for bonding purposes or lead them into their cages or foraging areas. Otherwise, I may stick some small pockets into toy nooks and crannies so they have to go hunting for it. It's great mental stimulation for them to have to look and they know they get a wicked reward for doing it.

I don't like how sometimes it's just hung as an entire spray inside of a cage because I think all birds need to be energetic and work for their rewards, as they do in the wild. Doing this, I wouldn't be surprised if birds like that wound up being significantly less curious, playful, and energetic because they haven't been taught to be.

My daddy puts a whole spray in until me and Verde eat it then give us a week without so it's still a treat. Remember tho we still need our normal food as well as water. Millet is not food just a treat. As far as the person who said we only need seed wrong! We need lots of nutrition which includes water, seed, fruits and veggies. Please look up which are safe for us tho because a few are very dangerous. We can eat nuts, peas, carrots and corn for sure. And we love strawberries and bannanas. These are natural foods for us in the wild. Below is a link or two from a expert on budgies and a great friend to us budgies around the world. Check it out.

Once a week would be okay I would say.....But not the whole millet spray stick as you mentioned, just a couple of inches would be fine and a good advice from me is that you can remove the seeds from the stick and put them on your palm and try to feed them this way so that they can get used to your hand as being "something safe"...Good Luck

I keep a spray in my parakeet's cage all the time--just clip it to the cage with an old-fashioned wooden clothes pin. He eats it a bit at a time, over several days, and when it's gone, I replace it. I've been doing this with my parakeets for years, without any problems.

It is fattening, so at the very most, only one time a week. For my two budgies, I give them the entire spray and hook it onto a veggie clip in their cage. It is a treat and they love it, but remember it is very fattening.

You can cut them into small pieces and place into the nest box before fledgling or feed in the breeding cage when the chicks emerge great for teaching Young birds to start eating.
& you can wash in a weak disenfectant to stop germs.

This millet spray IS NOT SAFE to feed birds. I would stay away from it, and certainly it is not for a regular diet. Keep them to their regular budgie seed. That is all they really need, of course with fresh water too.
