the simple answer is that religion is the system people set up to reach God.
Christianity is not a religion in the true sense. It is based on the acceptance of the Way God reached out to people.
There is a very great difference between the two.

Religion is an offshoot from the highly spiritual/ mystery schools of ancient cultures. Broken down to a system of belief designed to control the way people think by using doctrines from these schools without explaining the full meaning. The result is ignorance.
