I'm wondering if I should race him.

40 mph would be fast for a herding breed assuming that's accurate - but you probably will best use his speed as an agility or flyball dog. To run on the pro track he would need greyhound registration papers. To run amateur track he's need paper calling him a sigthound. And to be honest he would win either venue - Top greys go a tad over 40 and when our racing club timed amateur racing dogs the top whippets (the most common amateur breed) where also going a HAIR over 40 (say 41-42).

I don't know what you used to "clock" your BC but it wasn't accurate. Greyhounds top out at 45 mph. The other fast sighthounds all run 33 mph or more. Border collies are not faster than the fast sighthounds. Your dog probably can run about 25 mph for short distances but BCs are not bred for speed at the gallop.

I don't know about racing, but agility or flyball might be a good sport to try out. Border Collies do really well at these because they are not only pretty fast, but also agile.

Maybe you should get him involved in some type of agility contests. He'd probably love it. Something for that endless energy and also something to challenge that smart border collie mind.

my dog can out run a bike a full speed and he can out run any human he can go fast and he is agile don't race him he will be fast
