WAIT! Before you do ANYTHING, consult your lawyer. In some states, in certain situations, it is illegal to tape someone. Make sure that you will not be incriminating yourself, before you turn the tape over to the local police.
Also, make a copy for yourself. Make several copies and give them to close friends and family. This way, if you're executed, Vince Foster style, there will be a trail leading to the culprits.

I would definitely consult an attorney first. In most states, it is against the law to record someone without their knowledge unless you are a uniformed police officer or have identified yourself as a police officer before hand. As for it getting a defendant released.....it might, but it will take time.

Turn it over to the person who is in prison attorney. But remember that just because you have it, doesn't mean it's true. It could still take a long time to clear them.
