While I have to agree that the likelihood is of a Spanish origin for the name, the Philipines were ruled by Spain for about 350 years and a great many people came and went though Manila (not only Spanish but Dutch, Chinese, Japanese - before they closed the country and threw the foreigners out - and others. Spain had a large empire -Mexico was the most highly developed and controlled part of it- and a large bureacracy to run it with some colonial Spanish families living overseas for centuries. There is a story of the Tokugawa shoguns in Japan inviting Mexican silver miners to teach mining techniques in the Japanese mines on Sado island - in the 1605 - 1615 era - and they almost certainly transhipped through Manila. So although a "direct from Spain" Spanish origin name is, I am guessing, about 95% likely, there is also a small chance it "could" have come to the Philipines through Mexico or another part of the Spanish empire. I have heard that Spanish origin families in the Philipines often keep track of their genealogical information so you might actually find a lot of information there if you look.

I found this question very interesting since I, too, have often wondered how it is that people from the Philippines have Spanish names. The other users provided answers that stirred my interest even more, and so I did some on-line research. Wikipedia says that The Philippines was a Spanish colony from the 1500s to the 1800s. It also speaks of some links between the Philippines and Mexico. You may want to check out the article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines

I would doubt it. You would more likely have Spanish blood. The Spanish actually invaded the Philippeans and held it for some time, many of which bred with the local populations. One of your ancestors is in all probability a Spaniard, which could explain why you hold a Spanish surname.

The Spanish did pretty much the same thing to Mexico, which is why Mexicans speak Spanish and hold Spanish surnames as well.

It is more likely that you have Spaniard blood. You might think that it's Mexican but Mexico and the Phillipines were both colonies of Spain and therefore both cultures were mixed and the Spanish names were given to the indeginous people.
