For tryouts, we have a dance and singing section
What can I expect out of the dance section... as in what type of dance?? All it says is 'You will dance for Marty Lewis, our choreographer. Please wear clothing and shoes you can dance in"
But I heard that hes going to give us the combination...

If they're giving you the combination they probably want to see what your ability to retain and fallow instructions are. If your shown a routine can you pick it up quickly and accuratly or do you struggle with it.
What are you trying out for? If it's a musical, the dance will be something typical to that musical, in the same genre, if it's a school, what type of school is it?

All the previous advise given is good - let me add a couple more things to help you.

When Marty demonstrates the steps, say them to yourself. If you don't understand a step, don't be afraid to ask...as a choreographer I appreciate someone asking me about a step rather than not trying to understand it and I am apt to consider that person as a possibility. I am sure that unless Marty is looking for super experienced dancers the combination will be relatively short and simple. The choreographer basically wants to see if you can move well, pick up steps, stay on the beat and are willing to try. So take a big breathe, smile and go for it! By the way, if asked, be honest about your dance experience, or lack of it. I am assuming your dance experience is limited.....if auditioning for a school show it will probably be enough. If you really want to do more musical theater however, I'd advise dance classes. The more technical background that you have for the future the more shows you will do.

Good Luck and have fun! SMILE!!!

I don't know how competitive it is in your school, but as a music director, there are two things we are looking for in the dance audition.

1. Who can keep any kind of steady beat at all.
2. Who the real dancers are.

Because in most musicals, there are parts that are more dance-intensive than others, so these things need to be figured out. If you can keep a beat and learn ANY choreography at all, you should be good to go.

Relax, have fun, let the experience be your teacher. There will always be shows to be in during the course of your life and one rejection, if that actually happens, means nothing in the long-haul.

don't freak out. they will give you a combination that you need to pick up as quick as possible. they will only show you once. when they call you up you will probably dance in a group. you wanna show confidence and that you know what you are doing. if you mess up pull it off as if it is part of the dance. don't show fear. characterize with attitude. you become a whole different person. you wanna stand out and be the star of that group. be the best, but most of all have fun. break a legg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just auditioned for that sort of thing. Don't be nervous! It is fun! Just relax and have a good time, and make sure they get to see your personality and you'll be fine.
