5 year old beagle overweight?

i just got this beagle his well tempered and got him from a woman thats a dog catcher and finds homes for them she said his 10 pounds overweight lil barrel look i bought him nutramax low cal dog food type for overweight dogs i had retriever growing up im 33 now anywho how much food should he eat and how many times a day? i read the food bag said 2 1/3 cup for weight lose would that be twice a day? i plan on taking him for walks at least twice a day more in the summer as my family hikes and camps any advice would be helpful thanks

No that amount is for ONE time a day.

I never take advice from dog food comapnies as their goal is to sell dog food.

My vets says a healthy active dog 40 -80lbs should have between 2 - 3 cups a day, adjusted based on the calorie count of the food. If your dog is trying to lose weight this should be less.

We feed out weim (about 75 lbs) 2.25 cups a day. He gets at least 2 hours of outside running/playing a day and that is more than enough food to maintain hsi weight, with an occasional treat or half apple.

I would allow at least 1/3 cup of food for a snack, especially as you ween a heavier dog off its ritual overeating. The evenings can be especially hard as they watch you eat.

My mom's pudgy pooch, also a beagle, was put on a diet by the vet. The dog got a small amount of dog food mixed with a certain amount of lettuce to stretch it. Check with your vet. This may be a good idea for your dog, too. The best thing, of course, is exercise; it sounds like you're already planning that.
