OHHH gosh honey Ritolin is the worst! My daughter was also diagnosed at 6 yrs old! they started her on that and it was bad it made her moods flex at night! well then we changed her to adderall XR, wonderul medicinr its time released and no major side effects and NO COME DOWN!!!! And if you want natural remedy then get your child in lots of extra activity, the goal is to keep a adhd patient's brain physically busy! natural vitamins can work, BUT remember as much as you hate meds, they do work for a purpose adhd effects so much in ones life school wise, social skills, self esteem, and personal self forth! if want to talk furthur email me -k- good luck

Hello, I have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder myself, and I would like to see if I can help. Unfortunately A.D.H.D is a disorder that requires prescription strength medication to treat. A.D.H.D is a very serious trait. It is not considered a disorder by a majority of the medical community, and some people who have it adore it as a gift. Such people include Walt Disney (who claimed that he had a disorder that allowed him to work long nights on various tasks), Hollywood actors (who claimed that it allowed them to daydream much easier than non ADHD actors). So if you would prefer your child didn't take it, it is not a dangerous nor unpleasant disorder; however, your child's grades will probrably land in a range much lower than what he/she is capable of.
Ritalin and Adderall are both schedule II drugs (if you're not familiar with the Controlled Substances Act), prescription drugs that are of more concern due to abuse and danger are classified into schedules by the DEA. Other schedule II drugs include: OxyContin, Cocaine, Morphine, Fetanyl, and Methadone.
In conclusion, there are no home-remedies, herbal medicine or over the counter medications that treat ADHD effects, and you should talk this over with your physician who knows the situation much better. He will probrably suggest either cutting the number of days used (such as only monday-friday for school only), or he will insist that the current medication be used. I suggest taking his advice, as he is a medical professional, and knows ADHD and the medications like the back of his hand.
Best of luck to you!

I also have a young child with ADHD. I was strongly opposed to medication in the begining as well. We put him in behavoral therapy first. I recommend that if you do deside not to use the perscribed medication then you find the name of a good child therapist. I ended up having to use both therapy and a very low dose of medication. I honestly thing that this is the best course of action for all children.

I don't know if this will help but... My brother is an MD and was talking to me about an article he was reading about how "cod liver oil" given to children w/ ADHD and Impulsivity seems to help significantly. The dosage was 1 tsp in the morning and 1 at night.. I have a 6yr old who I'm going to try this with. Good luck
