I'm not an atheist but I am a firm believer in persons doing their own research. I forgive you since you are a grandma :) Since you are a Christian you may have read the scripture that says Acts 17:10,11 about the Christians in Beroea. Although they were taught by the apostle Paul, they diligently did their own research to make certain what they were being taught was so. I don't know how far the teaching of evolution went when you were in elementary school, but I do remember that it was not so much taught when my children went to school as taken for granted that everyone already knew it. For example their book would refer to certain animals 'adapting' or 'developing' certain features. I think that if for no other reason than to give your grandchildren solid facts, you would want to research these things on your own. You may e-mail me. I'd be happy to help you begin your research.

Because the questions you ask are a little too indepth for just a short answer. Most people do not like reading books here so that's why alot of people will tell you to research something on your own. And these questions about where the common ancestor came from probably should be asked in the science section. But maybe you are too afraid of the intellectual level to go there?

Atheists do NOT have beliefs regarding religion. Atheism, by definition, is a LACK of beliefs. Why is anyone rude? Christians? Muslims? Atheists? I don't know, you should ask the people that are rude, not a group as a generalization. And you should get the facts straight first.

That a pretty generalized statement to say of all atheists, and isn't always true. Atheists are more like to be curt with their replies if they know the person they're taking to is likely to try to refute their beliefs or stereotype them.
Also, many atheists are annoyed with the problems religions cause and how much emphasis society places on one's beliefs. What you believe to be rudeness on their part might be the expressing their frustration.

Isn't it rather impertinent to ask someone to provide answers to incredibly large questions like "Where do amino acids come from?" in a digestible, intelligible and BRIEF form on an answers forum? If you think it's rude to suggest that you do some more research instead of expecting other people who have to condense these ideas to a soundbite, then you are too thin skinned.

Not all atheists are rude, that's a generalization. I could just as easily say the same about Christians, Muslims and everyone else. What would be the point in that? To make such a broad, sweeping statement only serves to cause harm, it does nothing to improve anyone's image.
Maybe we only remember those who are rude because the way they voice their opinion makes the biggest wave.

It depends on the question, and how it's presented. If someone has an honest question, the majority of atheists have no problem with that and will answer you as honestly as they can. If it sounded like a veiled insult, or condescending, then the questioner might have gotten a biting remark back.

You talk about others being rude? You Christian fundamentalists think nothing of calling others atheists, telling religious people of other faiths that their religion is nothing but a godless cult and that God ignores their prayers, and telling everyone who isn't a bible literalist/fundamentalist that they are going to burn in hell for all eternity.
Are you ask why ATHEISTS are rude?

Don't allow the rudeness of others discourage you from asking questions. Remember, when they are here and being rude God might be working a good work in their hearts and they don't even know it.

The people asking about atheist beliefs are often very rude and/or patronising. Atheists merely follow their lead, more often than not.
