If you want a professional job done shop around. Call all the ones you find in the yellowpages and ask if they charge for estamates and ask if they have referances. It's really going to vary from one area to another what prices are, it depends on where you live.
If you just need things painted to freshen up the house and you don't nessecarily want a pristine job done, you could always just hire a few highschool students to do it over the summer, if you have a few nieces / nephews or cousins that could do it for you it would cost you less and I'm sure they'd appreciate a way to make some money. reguardless you'll get charged for all the materials,

By the job, get one estimate for the whole project. Then get at least 3 more estimates from other house painters. Ask what kind of paint they will be using, how they are going to do the job, ask about prep before they paint, and make sure complete clean up is included. A good quality interior latex will last and be easy to clean and comes in many finishes. Best bet, buy your paint yourself ahead of time and have it in the house in the rooms to be painted. You will get the color and texture you want and probably at a better price. Remember to get paint for your ceilings and trim, if you are going to paint the trim as well.

Some contractors will give you an overall bid, some will charge you an hourly rate. The cost will depend on square footage, how complex the job is, how much 'stuff' they have to work around. Most painters will come out and give you and estimate or discuss the job with you for free. Call a few and find one you feel comfortable with.
