There is a woman who is 5'1" and about 120 lbs who drank 2.5 ounces of Malibu Rum (31% alcohol) and 2.5 ounces of Blue Caracau (sp?), which is 30 proof. This woman is my mother. She drinks this "drink" whenever she has a stressful day (5 out of 7 days a week). She claims that it has absolutely no effect on her, and that she just likes it because it's "pretty and blue." *rolls eyes* Yet in the next breath when she's talking on the phone to her friends, she says, "God I need a DRINK!" (trying to whisper so that I don't hear).

Please answer the following questions:

1. Is that enough alcohol to make a person of her weight and height drunk? Buzzed? I know it varies depending on the person, but please give me a rough estimate.

2. She's lying about why she drinks it, right? I mean you don't drink something with alcohol for no reason, do you? I said that if she wanted it just "because it's blue," then she should have put some blue food coloring in water, to which she gets angry.

EDIT: To answer the third answerer, she drinks it in about 30 minutes.

Well, I'm 27 now, but I was an alcoholic from when I was 8 to 19 years old. I recovered, but I'm starting to recognize the same patterns in my mother that I see in myself (or SAW in myself, when I was an alcoholic that is). She never knew that I was an alkey though, I hid it very well, so I know that that wouldn't have contributed to HER drinking habits, right? Or at least I don't think so anyway...

You can tell if your mom is buzzed easily..can she walk steady?, talk clearly?, and go to the washroom without help? If your answer is no to any of these questions, then she's drunk/buzzed. HERE'S A BETTER TEST TO SEE IF SHE'S BUZZED, if she'll participate.
Hold a pen approximately 1 foot in front of her face and ask her to follow it with her eyes only as you move it slowly from one side of her face to the other (Tell her "do not turn her head to follow the pen"). Now, you look closely at her eyes when they are as far right or left as they can go.....if you see either eye "jittering" or shaking slightly, she's buzzed. In other words, if they do not move smoothly side to side, she's buzzed.
2. people sometimes drink socially....for enjoyment.

I'm sure this is going to sound lame but it all depends on the person. It's been shown that people with a family history of Alcoholism have a natural tolerance to smaller amounts of alcohol. Thus it takes more alcohol for that person to feel a buzz. A tolerance that builds and builds until that person is comsuming huge quantities just to satisfy the addiction. A person who doesn't have a family history might feel the affects of alcohol after 1 drink.
I remember that some years ago when my work had become stressful and I started to have a drink at the local watering hole during lunch. It quickly became two and three until I was returning to work buzzed. The beers relieved my stress but I quickly realized that I was starting to enjoy my liquid lunches far too much. I joined the gym and my stress is not a problem anymore.

1 5oz of alchohol can get someone drunk or buzzed but tolerance has alot to do with it. If she drinks this everyday and only one I wouldnt worrie to much.
2 you say she drinks this 5-7 days a week, is it just one or multiples of them? One drink a day is ok for you but can sometime lead to alcoholism. On the days she does not have her drink does she become very moody, is she agressive toward everyone? There are many ways to spot Alcoholism, I would suggest going to an AA Meeting and talking to another Alcoholic about what to look for...what better way to get info? Good Luck to you.

It sounds like your mom might be an alcoholic. She should at least get a buzz but if shes drinking most nights she is going to get use to it and need more alcohol to get a buzz or get drunk.
To the second question you don't need a reason to drink alcohol its better if you don't have a reason. Having a drink ONCE in a while because you feel like it is ok. But if you are drinking because you are stressed and NEED it that's not good.
It sounds like she is drinking because she thinks it makes her feel better, but it also sounds like she feels she needs it to feel better. That leads to become an alcoholic. I hope this answers your question. Best of luck to you and your mom.

1.no,she probably isnt getting drunk off that much, but she is more than likely getting a getting a little buzz. u build a tolerance for alcohol, so its probably not doing much.
2.yes shes lying about why she drinks it. if she just wants a blue drink, kool-aid makes a few drinks in a blue color.
she may b getting defensive over being asked why she drinks and thats why she says "because its blue". that pretty much just equals "because" which isnt an answer at all. add to that the fact that she gets angry when u say she should just put blue food coloring into water and she may not b being honest w herself about why she drinks. i myself drink (a lot more than one blue drink, might i add!) but i dont make excuses for why i drink...i like the feel of a good buzz, i like gettin drunk, i enjoy a good beer, its relaxing, hell, its fun to drink if u do it in a responsible enough manner.
ur mother is an adult and as an adult she gets to make the decision of whether to drink or not. as long as shes not driving afterward, isnt pregnant, isnt missing work to go drink, isnt drinking in the morning, isnt drinking at work, isnt neglecting or hurting u (im assuming u r a child or at least under 21)and isnt making bad decisions as a result of drinking, then there really is no harm in her having a drink after work. if u feel like there is a problem then voice ur concern, but u shouldnt expect her to quit drinking bcuz u say something. if u really feel like there is trouble and u feel ignored in ur efforts to let her know how u feel there r groups u can jointo get some support. i cant remember what the groups r called, but if u get in touch with a local alcoholics anonomous they can let u know a group for friends and relatives of alcoholics.
that being said, im gonna go get myself a beer. cheers!

1. How fast does she drink her drink?
2. She may have a high tolerance to alcohol since she drinks often.
3. She may not be drunk... maybe a slight buzz.
4. She may be a little alcohol dependent where she needs the booze to "unwind" and can't get by without a drink.

Well, I'm 5'1" and 120 lbs and that type of drink would not affect me. Sometimes after a long day of work I really want a drink to wind down and have caught myself saying "GOD I need a drink!" more than a few times. After stressful days, sometimes sipping on a nice drink helps me wind down.

I am irish, but that doesn't sound like a lot of booze.5 of 7 is about right. 5 work days 2 off, work sucks and you need to relax after the day,I do not know how old you are, but booze helps out.

Your mother is an alcoholic. Drinking that much everyday has become a staple in her diet. No it does not get her drunk but possibly slightly buzzed. When you drink like that everyday you develop a tolerance to it and need to drink more to actually get drunk. Kinda like a heroin addict that just shoots up to feel normal. That's what your mom is doing. And she is ruining her liver.

#2 she sounds like she could become an alcoholic, drinking to relieve stress isnt the smartest idea, that type of reason usually leads to alcoholism.

Talk to her and let her know that her drinking problem is starting to scare you, and you want her to be honest with you.
