You're not talking about the baby being born with the ambiotic sac still on its head? Many people keep the cauls, considering them to be good luck, but I've heard that when they are burned it is because otherwise they believe the child will become a vampire when they die! Were the priests or parents Polish or Czech, perhaps?
It is believed that "caul bearers" have the gift of second sight, i.e. ESP.

American Indians believe it is Evil., I was born with a white Veil and they told my Mom to watch as I grew up, I would be able to do anything and do it well. I would be "Lots" of things. It is true in my case. Too much to mention.

different cultures see it as different things. some say it is a sign of someone with hidden qualities, which could be good or bad. others see it as someone with a great gift of insight, being able to read between the lines better than others or even having psychic gifts. scientifically, it was probably just a bit of afterbirth stuck on there, but who knows if it signifies anything greater.

Legend holds that a baby born with a caul (the placenta) over its face will have second sight. "Veil" is another word for caul.

What do you mean it was born with a black veil over it's face? Like it came out of it's mother with a veil over it's face? Or while it was being born they put a black veil over it's face? I've never heard of this before......

It's called a caul, and babies born with this are said to have "second sight" or able to foresee the future. Hope that helps.

It means, who stuck that veil up in there? Ew.
+ also that you should stop trying to live vicariously through sub-par fantasy novels/shows/movies. It's sad.
