Wow everyone! Thank you so much.for all your thoughtful ideas. Anonymous made me teary. The song is great but too $$. I guess about $100. plus is my price range.

In addition to a traditional "gift", how about something like sending her homemade cookies? (or maybe there's something else that was special to the two of you when she was growing up?) - For example, if it was putting puzzles together, buy two of the same puzzle. Send her one & keep one for yourself and then put it together as a "joint" project.
I moved away from home several years ago and I STILL miss my mom - I love anything that makes me feel close to her.

How about a gift certificate to a store that she is sure to order something for herself that she really likes, or gift certificates to restaurants or the movies so she will go out and have fun on her birthday.

Depends on your budget. I would say a phone call or a card.
Purchase some flowers,and have them taken to her work or school.( FTD )You may call your local florist ,and they can help you send the flowers to her.(FTD)

I would say a gift card but since they are a little impersonal, I think jewelry would be nice if she wears it, redenvelope.com has some nice stuff!

a visa giftcard..they can be spent anywhere. maybe she wants that perfect handbag she saw or maybe she needs to buy groceries. either way she wins and you can feel like you made sure she got exactly what she wanted/needed.
