Just as Britain had declared that she was the master of the seas and no shipping was permitted to sail to or from France, Napoleon ordered that no country on the continent could trade with Britain. This hurt their economy severely. At first, Russia went along with this, but then changed her mind. That is why Napoleon invaded Russia.

Once France had gone through this great defeat, other nations were encouraged to do business with England and re-form old alliances against France.

Britain being mainly a naval power could not hope to defeat Napoleon one on one in battle, it's army was to small. So when Napoleans massive Grand Armee was all but destroyed it swung the tide in Britains favour. It carried on ruling the Med and the Atlantic whilst the French were left running at sea and on the continent. Britain gained massively from the defeat.
