Jonah 2:5,6
5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

Mountains at the bottom of the sea. How do you explane Jonah knowing this?

to answer your questuion it would not take much common sense to realize the earth is texured on dry land so why wouldn't it be under water?

Was Jonah swallowed by a fish or a whale?

Jonah 1:17
Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

Matthew 12:40
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly.
....................

Jonah 3:10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

Despite his repentance, God supposedly destroyed Nineveh a little over a century after Jonah, in Nahum 3:1-7

I am fairly certain that the people of that time were smart enough to assume that the mountains didn't stop at the shore so I would not be surprised by this statement made by Jonah although he was in the belly of the whale at the time.

It's "allegory", as noted in Galatians 4

Jonah's Great Fish Story
http://www.godshew.org/ShewBread2.htm#FishStory

Note the king thereof Nineveh which disrobed, stepped down, and sat in the ashes is a no name king; alleogorical for law. Note the prophecies failed when the people believed God(Grace). The punch line is: They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. Lying vanities are laws. Solomon notes the law is all vanity and vexation of spirit(grace). Law frustrates God's grace; For law added makes grace no more grace, just as death added to life makes it no more eternal life.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

I would say it's proof definite that he actually was swallowed by a fish and taken down in the ocean.

Have a great day.
