That's really hard to say. Out of our 5 cats, only the Maine Coon goes for the rodents around our house. The others are either disinterested or are more interested in playing with them before going in for the kill. Maine Coon cats are known for their hunting skills. They're also very social, get along well with other animals. Maine Coons are also VERY large cats.

Any cat will kill mice/rats BUT since rats can carry the Virus that causes rabies--Not all rats automatically carry rabies but must come into contact---it is not a good idea to have a cat or any animals that lives with you killing rats for the cat can get rabies and just one bite or a scratch can then infect family members and the shots are painful. Then too since rats eat garbage, other dead animals and other stuff were the cat or any animals to eat rats the cat could very well get very sick and die. Best that you (i you're adult) if child then go talk with your parents about it,put out Rat Traps or Rat poison-the baits are enclosed in a flat cardboard box(very small) and to makae sure that the rats will eat the bait inside I'd smear some Peanut butter or any other food stuff that has a strong food smell on the outside of the bait boxes. Naturally ,safety first and if there are small children or pets in the house etc then the baits MUST be placed where neither child or pet can possibly get to it(them)for will cause hemorraging and internal bleeding and if not gotten medical help immediately child can bleed to death . If it's in a Rental Building/House contact the Landlord but if nothing is done then contact the COUNTY Office that deals with Pest/Rat Problems an they will impose fines or threaten with closing the building -am sure the landlord will then cooperate. Even if a farm etc-not a good idea to get cat because of the rabies. But any cat exept a purebred-one hopefully that you rescue rom local pound-not a kitten for the rats will kill-has to be a HEALTHY ADULT CAT.

It is not easy to tell if your pussycat is a killer until he/she is in the posisition to kill.

Most will just play with the darned things and leave em be when they get bored. You then need to pick up a half alive rat body to dispose of.

Good news is that the smell alone will scare the rat/mouse away.

One time I lived in a "rooming house" I had just gotten a kitten and her food was kept by the side of the sink. I was half asleep and I heard a rustling near the food area. I said "Kirby cut it out" I had no glasses on so I assumed the "Kirby" sized creature was my kitten. Then I saw "Kirby" sleeping by my feet. Needless to say I discovered a BIG RAT! I freaked! It went into the wall behind the sink again.

I put "Kirby" with a friend and set a trap with moist cat food on it. The next day I was half asleep (again) and my friend was watching tv when we heard "SNAP" and then we saw the rat dragging the trap across the floor! It was so big and beefy the trap did not kill it right away! I was upset thinking the rat was suffering and I did not know what to do.
I left and got a neighbor to dispose of the trap. Luckily for the poor little rat he was gone quickly. "Kirby" came home. I re-set a trap in the same area just in case. I "Kirby" proofed the trap to save "Kirby's" nose and life.
Again a few days later "SNAP" and a slightly smaller rat was trapped this time. He went then and there. Poor guy. :( I DON'T like rats BUT I hate to see furry things suffer either. Ugly or not.

After that no more rats! I "Foamed" the hole and put her littler box within "smelling" distance of their favorite enterence. The smell of a feline DOES scare them away. They can smell a drop of kitty pee a mile away.

If you do have a cat place its litter box close to the most likely enterence hole for the rats if it is possible to keep a box there.

Soon enough the smell will "waift" on over to the rats hidey hole's and will alarm them enough to keep away. Hopefully. Or else use traps/exterminators.

Don't get a cat JUST to kill/scare rats away. Then what will kitty be in for when his/her job is done?

The best mouse killer and best cat is American Shorthair! I got this from a book called "JACK HANNAH'S Ultimate Guide to Pets":

"Tough sturdy intelligent classic pet-with a master's degree in mousing.Thick coat can weather the cold. A non-finicky healthy eater (so watch those treats!).Get along well with kids and other pets."

Cats with purple feet are known to be good ratters. I read it in a book.

P.S. If you can't find a cat with purple feet , I think just about any cat would work.
