Good luck. The subway costs 2 bucks and you can ride all night! Hotels are gonna kill you unless you look hard or stay in Brooklyn or Queens, but half the fun is staying in Manhattan. Look for decent packages and ignore the pain! look at www.nycvisit.com
Sometimes they have deals, plus lots of tourist info. Anything in midtown is expensive. Downtown Brooklyn may be good. There is a Big Marriot in downtown brooklyn, at Jay St, that is only one stop on the A to Manhattan. They may have decent rates. Lots of good restaurants in BK also. You have to get creative. If you aren't hung up on staying in Manhatten itself, you may find a deal in Downtown Brooklyn or Jersey, although thats a sep train fare in addition to NYC transit and may add up as well. NYC has small hotesl and hostels, but be careful. You could end up in some nasty places saving a few bucks.
Try nyc housing section on craigslist.com Sometimes people offer weekly/weekend sublets and other strange offers that may be worth looking into, especially if you have a few pople to split the weekly cost. People will rent their apartment for a week if they are out of town to make money. Some people do it all the time, although its really illegal.

Good luck and have fun

Good Luck. Either way its worth the trip. You can't come to NYC on the cheap. Lots of free stuff, but lots of real expensive stuff also. Like food/lodging.

New Jersey.

Seriously. All the decent hotels in Manhattan are well over $200 a night. Anything less than that is equivilant to a "No-tell motel".

I recommend that you go to hotels.com because they usually show what some of the best rates are and you can find out if there are any specials there. I have been surprisingly successful there.
