Human terms used to describe non-human (non-Earth) physical states will, inevitably, end in error.

Because humans passed through gates (specific points of entry) in order to 'be inside' certain structures, they thought of heaven (and the 'path' to it) in similar terms: a dog see's a dog's eye view of the world.

Heaven itself is not guarded, but it does have certain emotional/spiritual requirements for entry, mainly a confrontation with the affect of one's life upon others (known as a life review). Because the thought/expectation of a review is too painful for some beings to bear, they often flee before approaching the 'official' heavenly limits and go wander into the 'darkness', which is really the darkness of ignorance because many humans do not go there and explore it. Those who have spent time wandering the 'darkness', sometimes feel the need to 'approach' heaven, but because they are not yet reconciled to what awaits them (oftentimes, their time spent in the darkness is punishment enough to balance against the deeds they may/may not have done) they flee, which leads others to believe that heaven, thus, is guarded.

I think it is to keep people from slipping out. Once trapped into beliefs, the authorities of heaven probably don't want the crazies from leaving the institution.

Yes, many are trying to slip in. The idea is for your sake not God's
He's telling you the gate is narrow.

Heaven is what it is, all around us. It is called the ionsphere, that protective layer that keeps us from being fried by the suns harmful rays.

Heavens angels are all around us, as invisible emmisaries to God, and so are satans angels as tempters.

The demons who created the Nephilim are there and some of the host that satan took with him, if I am not mistaken. He has to stop them from escaping, afterall we already have enough demons that are running around free anyways, we don't need more.

nothing evil/impure will cross the gates of heaven that is why it is very well guarded.
