How long should I do a detox for and what should it consist of apart from drinking loads of water? What benefits will I get from doing this?

Please don't detox. It's a fraud.

What is "detoxing," anyway? Supposedly it's getting rid of "toxins" in our systems caused by our industrial society. So we go on a restrictive diet which is supposed to "flush" these things out of us.

They don't work.

Master Cleanse has been around since the 70s, and it's a terrible diet. Even Beyonce Knowles, who used it to lose some weight for her role in Dreamgirls, has gained back all the weight and now warns people away from this fraudulent diet.

We have mulitple systems for getting rid of toxins--liver, kidneys, lungs, even the intestines--wihch do a great job of removing toxins. Nothing we can eat or not eat will help them do their job.

I once asked people in a health food store how Goldenseal works. "It cleanses the blood," they said. "How?" I asked. "It removes the toxins." "How?" I asked. "By cleansing the blood."

Oh.

They had no idea.

Now, do you know how a "detox" diet is supposed to work? What chemical reactions does it cause to remove toxins? Does it bind them? With what?

And any diet that advocates flushing with a lot of water or especially using laxatives is to be avoided. That will remove food from your intestinal tract, but not toxins.

The best way to detox is each day to eat a balanced, vegetable-based diet with at least ten times the calories as you want to weigh in pounds. Drink plenty of water, sure, but don't, please don't, fall for the 'detox' idea which just doesn't work. Eat well, eat happily, eat low fat, but enjoy your meals and your life.

Sorry, detox is a current myth. There is no controlled medical nor scientific basis for it at all. It seems very much an 'in' myth, going by the number of questions that crop up each day.

Eat a good balanced diet with plenty of varied fruit and vegetables. Exercise for 30-40 minutes 4-5 days a week. Drink normal amounts of water, 2 1/2 litres or so. Take little alcohol, don't smoke and don't take drugs. Those are the magic answers!

Well, there's the Master Cleanse, also called the Lemonade Diet. It's fairly easy for the first three days. You'll lose some weight for sure. But you're s'posed to do it for 10 days. After day 3 or 4, you may go a little nuts not eating solid food.

You mixe 2Tbs of lemon juice with an equal amt of maple syrup and a pinch of cayenne in 8 oz of water. Drink 6-12 glases of this per day, also drink lots of pure water. But eat nothing else for 10 days. Actually you can have green tea. I added the maple syrup to it and it was good. But I need solid food!

I did it twice and lost a total of 10 lbs. But I went 4 - 5 days max. Then all of a sudden a few WEEKS later I gained 6 lbs seemingly overnight! That really ticked me off. I think it was my body compensating for the "starvation" during the fast.

I've heard raves about it from other people though.

I just bought Dr. Natura. I haven't tried it yet though.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.

I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.

It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

detox plans are dependant on how intense your day or week is and what works best for you so it would be good to consult a specialist. Yoga has worked well for me as it has a variety of things that help me stay fit without putting strain on me and instead leaves me feeling relaxed. Dancing is amazing, usually fun and definitely a good workout, if you enjoy reading then that's also good, but water is always the way to go so swimming does a lot and leaves you feeling refreshed.
