Would like to move to Hawaii with my 3 kids. I am a single mom and want to live in a nice safe town, close to lots of things to do with the kids. Had considered the other Hawaiian Islands, but think they may be too 'boring' for the kids - so thought Oahu would be more fun. Not sure which towns would be best. Need affordable housing (if that's even a reality over there now in 2007) - any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am living in upstate N.Y. now (hate it) want sunny warm weather (year round preferably) was thinking either Las Vegas area ? (But not sure if too seedy a town to raise kids in) - or Oahu. The cheaper homes seem to be on the Leeward side of the island (Wai'anae, Ma'ili and Makaha) but I heard these areas are not so 'desirable' because of the distance to town (not sure how far it is) and that the area has more crime, and a lower standard of living. So I am thinking to stay away from that area. I love Haleiwa (but it seems a fortune there from what I have seen). I just don't know what to do. I am SO CONFUSED !?!?!? If any of you have any ideas or suggestions please help me. I am going through a divorce now, and will be moving hopefully by this summer and not sure where to go. I love Hawaii and the 'aloha spirit' but know this next move will be our last for a long time, so I need to find the right place. Safe, fun, lots to do with kids, sunny, warm, and I love the beach. Well there is a neighborhood in a town called Waikele it is really nice, in walking distance to a school, and also in walking distance to an outlet mall and another shopping center including Kmart and lots of restaurants. The neighborhood is called Parkglen at Waikele they are apartments, all the apartments have air conditioning, I am pretty sure that all the apartments have two-bedrooms so that could be a problem with three kids but it is an awesome area. So you might also want to try Celebrations in Waikele it is right near Parkglen and is bigger, these are houses it is a really nice neighborhood. Then there is another town called Pearlcity it is a little more but it is very nice there is one neighborhood called wailuna which includes both town homes and houses, the houses are kind of expensive though they are very nice, beautiful landscaping and very spacious homes. the town homes are a more affordable option they are I think all three bedroom and 2 bathrooms with a nice living room and underneath you (if you have an upstairs townhome) or beside you is a garage to park your car I would say that it would be best to get an upstairs town home they are very breezey and the children can park their bikes in the garage. And an added bonus both the town homes and the houses have acsess to two pools both with hot tubs and a lighted tennis/ basket ball court with another hot tub and a playground, what child wouldn't enjoy that :). This neighboorhood is very close to a huge soccer feild and another public play ground and a nice elementary school. and a short driving distace away is the pearlridge mall and lots of restaraunts and a shopping center and a little farther is sams club and walmart. now there is one more option it is in Ewa beach which by the way Ewa beach Elementary is an awesome school well anyways it once was a military only neighborhood but now it is open to the public (not too many people know that) it has three bedroom homes and get this some of the homes are right on the beach and the others in walking distance to the beach it also has a playground and this is an affordable option. I hope my information helps.

If schools are part of your priority, Kapolei would be a good place. It is nicknamed Oahu's Second City and lots of businesses are opening up there. The public schools in that area are ones that everyone wants to get into. They are more "accelerated" than other public schools and they are a brand new school with air conditioning.
The do have a new affordable housing there (i'm not sure if they have any openings). It was a previous military housing that was renovated. But the affordable housing was 1500 to 1700 a month. That is affordable in Hawaii now. There is a shortage of homes also, so plan ahead.

If you are looking for areas where the housing might be the cheapest I would say try Ewa Beach (also close to Kapolei). Waianae is the cheapest, but not safe if you are not Hawaiian. Aiea/Pearl City are good places to live, but expensive.

Check the newspaper websites to see what they have for
rent and if it fits within your budget. The classifieds are on the websites. They have two newspapers www.starbulletin.com and www.honoluluadvertiser.com

When I was living there, making only 4000 a month was not enough for me and 3 kids. We finally made the move to the mainland last year.

If you have any other questions, let me know. Good luck with the move.

**Update from my previous answer...
To be honest, it is going to be hard, unless you have money. Those places you mentioned that are cheaper are not good to live in. Stay away from Waianae definitely. I moved from Hawaii to Vegas recently and I saw that Vegas was one of your options. Well, I live in Henderson which is a much, much more residential area. I do not miss Hawaii at all. I love it here. There are lot of people from Hawaii that live here too. We struggled when we were in Hawaii. Now, we are doing much, much better. My rent and utilities are about 1/3 of what it would be in Hawaii. There are not so many jobs too in Hawaii. I guess it depends what you do. Nurses and x-ray techs are in demand. Henderson (near Vegas) would be a good second option, but ultimately its up to you to decide what you want to do.

Wow, from New York, what a big decision. Again, good luck.

House to the State Capitol, Honolulu may be the lively epicentre of Hawaii and a city worth visit, as you might find with hotelbye . In Honolulu you'll find every thing from historic landmarks and cherished monuments to world-class shopping and a flourishing arts and tradition scene. Home to nearly all Oahu's citizenry, the expansive town of Honolulu spreads through the entire south-eastern shores of Oahu, from Pearl Harbor to Makapuu Point, encompassing earth famous Waikiki. Pearl Harbor is among Honolulu's greatest tourist attractions. Though it is house to the Navy's Pacific Fleet, visitors can take a tour to begin to see the USS Arizona Memorial, and the USS Missouri.

I have triplets. About 4 month and 1 week old triplets. The triplets were concived within a week or me and my husband getting married! It was quite the shock! Hoepfully, it will get easier but I'm not so sure. Either way I won't care! I love my babies! I feel the relief at about hmmmm...9:00 when they go to sleep for the night. I am told I a lucky though because they have always slept through the night since they were 3 weeks old. Anyway, good luck and I hope you DO find some relief. And remember, there is nothing wrong with calling a sitter (or one of your parents!) and taking a trip to the spa or just doing errands by yourself!

I asked the same question, but I don't have kids. No island has a much to do as Oahu. Molakai is more affordable, but like the big island, not too much to keep the kids excited. Kauai, expensive, but lots of stuff to do (outdoorsey). Maui might be nice - not too big city, like Honolulu, but like all of them you'll need some money! Good luck!! What lucky kids!
