I believe the limits are sunlight and nutrients. Find a way to maximize both and plants would produce more energy.

One thing that will help is the plants will produce as much food as they can as it accelerates their growth. The plants recycle our air as following. CO2 is taken by the plants and holds on to the C and gives the O2 ,but that is just the first step now to the recycling of fossil fuels. The plants grow big and winter comes the leaves fall off and wash down the rivers to the delta where it deteriorates into gas ,oil , and coal. Now we could help by geting the lawn and tree leaves down to the rivers ,that will help get more of the material of the plants to the delta.

You don't need to improve the process. All you need to do is establish a favoralbe environment for plants to grow in and they will grow very well on their own.
