You'll definitely want your XP back! There are too many bugs with Vista, and a lot of things don't work with it because they haven't shared information with other companies. My brother bought a brand new laptop that they assured him would work with a cellular card, and it didn't. I'd wait a while until they get the bugs out.

You also have to check to make sure your computer is Vista ready.
I received a link from Cnet Downloads that had a test to see if your computer was ready for Vista, mine is not and it is Windows XP and I have only had it for about 6 months.
Also, if you wanted to download updates or anything from the Microsoft Website, they have a tool that checks to see if you are running Genuine Windows, there may be something in the Vista to account for how many copies or computers were sold.
In short, I would say don't take it, and like someone else suggested, wait until the bugs are worked out.

Based on what i heard, Vista is really similar to XP. I think that XP is still the way to go because Vista still needs to come up with a service pack that includes an update on all its driver. If you do go ahead and get vista, make sure that all your drivers function properly. I know my friend who got vista and now he had to pay extra cash to upgrade his driver, buy a new printer, and scanner because the old ones weren't suited for vista. Make sure you think it through before u do anything.

If Vista was included on his new computer then it will be activated on his computer. If it's activated on his computer, it won't activate on your computer. Each copy can only be installed on one computer at a time.
If he's uninstalled it then you can install it - maybe. If it's the OEM version then it's tied to his hardware and can't be moved.
A lot of people are complaining about Vista because it's different, and they don't like different. It can be kind of a shock. I'd suggest using your friend's computer some, or watching him use it, and getting to know the OS before you make your decision. You may install it and hate it and uninstall it, but find that if you knew it better you would have loved it.

Well, it is illegal and you will be losing all your data. You may not be eligible for some microsoft offers either if it thinks your copy is not legit.
However you can do what is called dual booting where ytou have two operating systems. I would not reccomend dual booting vista unless you are really serious about it.
If you did do a full switch the only thing you would be kicking yourself for is losing some files. It is possible to backup your files to transfer them, but you may forget a few and hence be kicking yourself.
The desicion is really up to you now but if you do decide to dual boot, see this: http://lifehacker.com/software/top/windows-vista-beta--how-to-dualboot-windows-xp-and-windows-vista-179906.php
Skip the part about downloading the .iso and just use your friends disk instead.

Vista may not work with your other computer program, printers, scanners, camera program, games.
make sure you back up your windows restore disc. before you try vista, also vista doesnt support alot of programs that are already on the the market, and microsoft hasn't make all the patches and drivers for the products that currently work with xp

B-Rad ... Yes, I'd wait. You can search in Yahoo Answers or other sites for info about Vista. Unless you've got a fairly fast computer with a lot of RAM, you're going to be disappointed. Furthermore, Vista is buggy and I hear plenty of complaint about their hardware/peripherals no longer working because there are no drivers for them yet. "If it aint' broke, don't fix it."

No, keep XP. Most peripherals(printers, cordless mice and keyboards, scanners, etc.) don't have updates yet, AND there is definitely software problems, as well. A lot of computer programs that have been out won't recognize Vista.

I think you will be kicking yourself later, Vista at this point is a little unstable and has a bunch of security holes. Deffinitly wait until another service pack comes out to get it!
