I am installing new door knobs and when I tighten the screws, the door handle doesn't have a spring to it anymore. I have diagnosed the problem to be with the latch. For some reason, once I tighten everything the latch is no longer in there straight and the door sticks. Any suggestions? It's driving me crazy as it works when the screws are in only about 1/2 way and then it sticks if I put them in further! I have an adjustable latch, I'm using the 2 3/8 position, should I move it to 2 3/4? If I do that, it's going to dig into the inside of the door some.

What does binding mean? And if the old latch fit fine, why doesn't this one?

Sounds like it is binding in hole. Make sure nothing is touching. You might have to file the hole out a bit.

Don't over tighten, this causes hollow doors to compress and squeeze the latch
