They are obviously fighting for dominance. Once a leader between the 2 of them is chosen, the other one will "step back" a bit.

Several years ago, I rescued a stray and brought her into the house with our five other cats. Four of them sniffed her and that was all the fifth hissed and spit and smacked at her. This behavior went on for three years, one laying claim to the second floor, the other to the main floor. Except a meal time. Suddenly it stopped.
Now, they occasionally sit back on their haunches and have a slap fest, which is actually quite entertaining to watch.
It probably, like my two, won't stop completely. But they will reach an understanding eventually. Be patient.

They are trying to establish the "Alpha" cat.
It is frustrating trying to figure out why they are not the buddy's you imagined them to be.
One would think that both cats being fixed and all would solve the problem BUT it is not reality.
Being fixed does not take away from the fact that they are both of the opposite sex and they know it.
So yes, it IS a territorial issue and a "Alpha" cat issue.
It can be a jealousy issue too.
Until they resolve their issue (we can't hurry them along) a good spritz from a water bottle will put a damper on their fustiness..

Unless the fighting is accompanied by lots of hissing and growling, I think they are just playing. Indoor cats have a lot of energy to burn off and play fighting takes care of that - my two are exactly the same. Unless one of them is getting injured by the other (such as biting since they no longer have claws) then I don't really think that there is anything to be worried about.
