Guten Abend is the evening form of hello in the German language. Literally it means "Good Evening".
German, as in many continental languages uses a different greeting for different times of the day.
Guten Morgen - litterally, Good Morning. Used before 12pm
Guten Tag - litterally, Good Day. Used from 12pm - 5pm
Guten Abend - litterally, Good Evening. Used from 5pm -9pm
Guten Nacht, Litterally, Good Night, 9pm-Morning.
Additional Factoid - When in the Bavarian region, the greeting is GruBe Got - literally, Great God, regardless of the time of day.
I hope this helps :-)
