I am certain that I want a mountain bike, but a hybrid may be better for my wife. I used to ride trails in college. I had a Cannondale until I got careless and only locked it up by the front tire. Yeah, that's right, I went to the bike rack and someone took most of my bike but they were kind enough to leave me the front tire.

if you're going to ride pure mountain them go mountain bike...but if you want something to do both, go with a hybrid.

if your wife just wants to ride on the road but be super comfy you can do a hybrid. what comes to mind is the trek 7000 series. some things about them, suspension fork, suspension seat post to add a little more comfort, larger diameter wheels, so oyu can get to point a to point b faster, a larger and comfy seat, an adjustable stem, so she's not stuck hunched over and stuck in one position. and it can sit pretty upright too....but you can take it on lite trails to ride and i've even seen customers use it for road bike races.

for you, you can either rock a mountain bike or a gary fisher hybrid, which are called dual sports or the path bike....a litte more rugged than than trek so you can actually abuse it mountain biking but nice for city riding with larger wheels....nice thing is that it has most the comforts of the trek.

trek owns gary fisher but they come out with different bikes....both have lifetime warrenty's on the frame, year warrenty on the bontrager parts and two year warrenty on the shimano parts......if they are a good bike shop too they should have a free tune up after purchase of a bike, cause cables do stretch out and need to get readjusted....

but seriously go to a store and test them out.....just don't go on heresay because everyone is different and feels different on each bike.....

hope this helps

Hybrid bikes comes to my mind, but probably some mountain bikes will be good for what you want. What you need to decide is what is off road, if off road is just some bike trails on parks, a hybrid might be the best option, but if you want to do more rough stuff, get a mountain bike.

There are lot's of good bikes out there. If you're looking at mountain bikes, go for hardtails since they would adapt better for what you want (don't get a full suspension, because they will be more expensive for the good ones, and the low end ones will not be really good on roads).

Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Giant, GT and others makes some very good options. Also, it's imortant to get a good bike shop that will answer all your questions and offer good service, so probably find a shop that put attention to what you want, answer your questions and think that they will support the bike later on. And then see which bikes they offer.

If you plan on riding together I would suggest a tandem it saves a lot of frustration and waiting for the other to catch up. There are many brands of tandem, as there is with other bikes. They both come in on road and off road formats.(and a lot of in betweens).

If you go for two singles or one tandem the advise is still the same.

Make sure you get the right sized bike. No brand of bike is that good that you can discount any of the others. Visit a few bike stores in your area and look and test ride what is on offer. A decision is usually based on price versus components.

Rarely are good bike and department store mentioned in the same sentence by serious cyclists.(this is one example)

consider a "crossroads" or "hybrid" bike... kind of gives you the best of both worlds, for road and some off road (but not the hardcore mountain bike trails)...

check out Trek, KHS, Giant, and Specialized...
and remember to go to your local bike shop and get fitted... it is worth the extra time and effort

you decide on a convenience or hybrid bike to holiday on the roads and bike paths. Mountain motorcycles and made for off street and cruisers are basically one velocity. you decide on gears so which you would be able to pedal somewhat in any respect circumstances. flow to the community bike save and tell them the place you decide directly to holiday. cycling is a huge exercising for anybody not basically little ones.

Giant hybrids are great and really affordable. They are long lasting, and you can upgrade to disc brakes and a bit of suspension for not much more money.

I picked up a mongoose XR250 21 speed mountain bike, I have had very good luck with it and enjoy it a lot. It is very well built and you can pick them up at your local wal mart for a little over $200
