Everyone exploits the resources of the planet, not just Christians.
The excuse they would give is in Genesis that man must subjigate and rule the earth.

Yes, Christians are responsible for that. Just like they are responsible for bad weather, hungry children, traffic jams, bad hair days, the long line at the grocery store and anything else where blame needs to be placed and oh yes, they are the only ones who drive cars that use gas and oil, pollute the environment and use heating and a/c, oh and don't forget they are the only ones breathing and wasting the precious oxygen.....No need for anyone to take personal responsibility...
Hope you get my point..It has more to do with being a human being than a Christian. And if someone asked a question like that specifically pointing out another belief or religion all he** would break loose...Not attacking the questioner but that's a very unfair statement. Good luck with the assignment.
I see your additional details, after these posts you will be well prepared. Good for you!

Well, I don't know of any groups that would try to lay the blame solely on Christians. At least not any with any kind of sense.
The fact is that all humans are responsable for exploiting the resources of the planet. Hell, we exploit oxygen and other elements just by breathing.
It is, however, incumbent on humanity to at least try to minimize, if not repair, the damage. The planet can only take so much before it's completely out of balance.

The exploitation of resources has been a result of advances in technology. As any society (regardless of religion) advances the demand for resources increases. Rapid technological growth began in Protestant Europe. One may or may not attribute that to Protestantism itself. Certainly the mandatory Bible reading of the Protestent denominations promoted literacy which in turn promoted increased learning and invention.
None the less, technological growth started in Western Europe and spread with that culture to the US, Canada, Australia, etc.
Now there is a tremendous technological leap going on in atheist China and with it massive exploitation of both domestic and imported resources.

It depends on how that statement is meant. If you are stating that Christians are "solely" responsible then No, obviously not. But we are as responsible as the other millions of people who do exploit the resources of the planet.

Whoever made this statement might as well single out Jews, Blacks, Asians, Gays and any other race religion or creed while they are at it. To place blame for something as extensive as the exploitation of earth's resources upon the heads of any one group is blatant narrow-minded hate-driven ignorance and bigotry.
As a Christian myself, my answer is biased, but I would never blame the problems of this world solely on the heads of non-Christians.

The planet has been equally exploited by predominantly Christian, atheist, Buddhist, Hindu, Mayan, Aztec, animist, and Taoist societies, so it is probably the case that people tend to exploit the planet and their religion seems to have little to do with it.

The statement itself is wrong because it presupposes that all human beings are christians. The statement should have been " Human beings are responsible for exploiting the resources of the planet". And in this case also it is natural for any human being to search for resources and use it for his advantage.

Hi.
Well, I am sure the statement's premise is Genesis 1: 28 where God says to man to "subdue the earth" and "have dominion" over all things.
If you have a narrow view of Christians - that they are all Republican, pro-oil industry, SUV-loving, pro-Bush, ultra-patriotic, then you would also say that Christians are guilty of wrecking the earth.
But that view of Christians is false and ridiculous. There are lots of Christians who vote Democratic, are against the war, and who want to protect the environment.
god bless

Lol.
If you wanted to argue that, you'd simply point out Europe is predominantly christian and europeans have had the balance of power till very recently.
That said, China and India are non-christian and are increasing their rate of exploitation dramatically.
