My 1998 Dodge Caravan is having transmission trouble. Sometimes it will slip, but if I turn the van completely off and then back on, it is fine. Could this be something that would not require the entire transmission to be replaced? Any information would be appreciated!

They had a lot of problems with input and output sensors on the transmissions on these. There's a good chance that these are causing your problem, they are relatively inexpensive repairs. Anotehr possibility is a control module.

A lot of independent shops will not know how to properly diagnose these, and will try to sell you a reman transmission or try to sell the reman for the extra profit they'll make over replacing a sensor. If they recommend a replacement trans, get a second opinion. I would recommend taking it to the local dealer since they'll have good experience working with these problems. If the dealer recommends a trans replacement, still get a second opinion.

One thing to beware of if you take it to a trans specialty shop. If they ask if they can "go into it" (or something similar) to try to determine the problem, decline and take it somewhere else. This is a tactic to strand you there and make you spend money there one way or another. They will tell you that if you want to take it with you, you'll have to pay for the teardown and will have to have it towed off or pay to have it reassembled. This is a bully tactic to get you to do the work there. Modern vehicles have enough electronics components on them that they can usually tell if it needs a rebuild by hooking it up to a diagnostic computer.

I have a 1997 Grand Caravan and I had gaskets replaced on my transmission...it was leaking.

I have heard so many negative comments about the transmissions put into those minivans. It's a real sore spot with them!

Check to see if there's any fluid leaking, because I've had it where I'd be driving, it would be in drive, and the thing acted like it was in neutral. Since I got those leaky gaskets replaced, so far I've had no trouble!

Check your transmission fluid level,,,,,and if it is alright then start thinking about another transmission,,,unless you are going to have the one you have rebuilt.
These are a definate weak spot on Dodges.

sory to hear that... you really should have it looked at by someone you trust. i have the exact same vehicle... although i have not had that problem, i did take it to a mechanic for the breaks, he said that he used to work at a trani shop and those ones always came in on the "stretcher"... get it looked at before it becomes an even bigger problem... take it to a couple places, go with who you trust and feel comfortable with. good luck, dodge caravans kick butt :)
