Bart ... A dual-layer DVD is an option. Compression might help too. But sooner or later you're going to grow tired of the time, cost, and effort required. Eventually you may expand your thinking to consider an external hard drive. Even a "small" one with just a 200 GByte capacity is quite inexpensive these days; it runs about $125 or less, perhaps. It's faster than writing to a DVD and holds more data, of course.

Mind you, there's nothing wrong with doing it your way, but I just wanted to make you aware of another/different alternative. Good luck, Bart.

With a Dual-Layer DVD burner you can get 9GB of data backed up. Why can't you split the files in half that are being backed up and perform two backups? Try creating the backup file and using a compression utility to make it smaller--like WinRAR or Win Zip. It probably won't make that much fifference but it could compress it enough to fit on one single-layer DVD.

Backup your music and pictures separately. These are often two of the biggest space hogs. If still too big, divide again into a-m and n-z or some other split.

BUT, the best way is to buy another internal hard drive and just transfer over the files using drag and drop. No compression needed and the files are there when you need them instantly.

you can buy your self a dual layer DVD that has atleast 8.7GB
or you can buy an external harddrive just copy and paste your stuff into the drive but if you want to back up your whole system then get the external harddrive and download DrvClone will make a complete duplicate of your PC like incase of harddrive failure you can just use the external as a backup device adn reinsstall ur OS with all your stuff on another HDD

Use Acronis True Image. It can backup your data on any media. In your case the best way is to backup files on external HD, but if you don't want to buy it you can Use True Image and backup files on DVDs. True Image will distribute your data among several disks. I think it is the best solutions and you will be able to restore your documents in few clicks. Follow the link to learn more: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
