Every time I try to drink alcohol at night, even as early as 6 or 7pm, I'll get vivid nightmares. Most people I know say that alcohol relaxes them and helps them sleep better. Why do you think I'm getting this reaction, and is there anything I can do about it? Maybe it is because I'm not a regular drinker (I go out for a drink or two every couple weeks or so), and my body is just not used to it. Would drinking on a more regular basis cut back on this reaction?

Well, just as a disclaimer, I'm not a doctor, but two things come to mind.

1- You may not be built to digest alcohol. Alcohol is a very volatile product, hard to digest. Some people have the stomach for it, and others don't. So if you're drinking and it causes you to have nightmares, that's probably just your unconscious' way of expressing this is not doing your body any good.

2- Or, on the contrary, maybe you tend to be a light sleeper. Do you have problems with insomnia? Alcohol usually sends people in deeper sleep than they're used to. So if you're in the habit of waking up several times during the night, it might be a sign you're an anxious sleeper by nature. So that with the alcohol, you continue to sleep when you would normally wake up in the middle of the night and you'r already agitated, hence the bad dreams that then get a chance to fully form.

Alcohol actually disrupts the normal sleep patterns and inhibits a natural restful night. Those who suggest that it helps them sleep probably drink so much, they pass out!
Drinking on a more regular basis to solve this problem sounds a bit screwy!!!

Alcohol withdrawal tends to make it hard to sleep. The subject tends to spend a lot of time throwing up also. This can go on for days. Just based on what I've watched alcoholics go through when coming off one of their binges. Serious withdrawal cases require hospitalization, and the subject can die.

Sounds like you and alcohol do not mix well! Alcohol actually disrupts a sound sleep , I think it is because it does not allow the body to rest.

Alcohol is a depressant. Dreams are connected to our subconcious and the spirit realm. There is a reason they used to call alcohol spirits. Your bound to get some funk in all that.

well what i believe is that somehow you feel that you going out is bad? maybe religious or family issues?

Maybe subconciously you feel guilty of drinking. Diminish the guiltyness (if thats a word) and it willl go away.

There is i think my fellow respndents will agree that there is nothing wrong in having few drinks now and then with your friends.
