I always had swimming lessons at school as the school had a swimming pool - also would nip into my local sports centre now and then with my parents as a child.

So when I grew up and had my children, they went swimming too. I was surprised to find an old friend (in his late 30s) had never learnt to swim and yet he lives near the sea while I don't.

We have enrolled my eldest son to swimming lessons every week to help improve his skills and confidence before he starts school later this year.

We took our youngest child swimming last weekend and he loved it although unsure at first but that's natural.

It is funny how my eldest loves swimming yet HATES having his face washed at home?? Go figure!

My kids are fish. They love the water. My daughter(age 6) took swim lessons with a group of around 10 kids, but she already knew how. My son (age 3) is still in floaties, he's a bit shy yet, but he's getting there.

Kids need to be able to take care of themselves around water. My kids were swimming early and then we got private lessons for them when they were around 5 or 6. I grew up around the water and learned early that teaching my own to swim was not wise so we let someone else do it. Kids that learn early (before 1) do not create the fear of water.

My son knows how to swim. He is 5 years old. His father started learning him how to swim when he was 2 years old.
Now even though he can swim we do not let him go in deep water.

My parents never did let me or my siblings around deep water (lake/pool) because my mom was scared that one of us would drown cause she almost did when she was a little girl.

I am scared to get in deep water and don't go no futher than it (water) up on my chest then i start to smother when i get that far out.
None of my sisters or brother can swim. I would try like hell to save my child if he were drowing but i would proably die cause i cannot swim. My husband has tried to learn me but my fear takes over and i can't..

GOD-I HOPE YOU WHO HAVE KIDS HAVE EITHER TAUGHT THEM TO SWIM OR YOU HAVE SOMEONE TO TEACH THEM TO SWIM, ONLY CAUSE WHEN THEY ARE THAT BIT OLDER (BETWEEN THE AGES OF 12 AND 15) THEY GO OUT AND EACH KID DARES THE NEXT ONE TO GO SWIMMING IN A LAKE OR SOMETHING 9 I know i did that-i was what you would call a strong swimmer-until i came up with a problem) so any strong swimmer-isn't really a strong swimmer-but buy knowing the BASICS swimming strokes you have a chance..---SO PLEASE TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO SWIM -EVEN IF IT IS THE BASICS...

this is a topic that i am anal about, my children received swimming lessons at 6 months and they took them until 13 or so, my 2 oldest sons are now lifeguard trained, i cannot tell you how many times a parent has let there child go to the beach with us forgetting to tell me they cannot swim, i do not think to ask because why would you let them go, or why would you not teach them to swim, it's crazy, the stats on how many children die from drowning is unreal, shame on parents that don't teach there children to swim

Last summer my son was only four months old so I couldn't really teach him and I was so worried about his heat rash. This summer I'm going to teach him to swim and enroll us in a swimming class. I don't want it to be forced on him but I think it's a great skill to learn.

whose on a mission today witrh the parenting questions eh? My daughter goes once every two weeks, I am a water baby and I hope water sports are something we can do together when she's older. A few weeks ago she took her feet off the bottom for the first time, it was very emotional I have to say. I love the look on her face when she's proud of herself, makes me well up every time.

My daughter has been in the swimming pool since she was 3 months old. We live near the Atlantic Ocean so it's important that we raise swimmers. She has no fear of water whatsoever.

My parents just figured that I would learn at school. They lived in California, and they had swimming in PE. We don't live in California, and swimming is not taught in North Carolina Schools. Also, because it was not something that they really enjoy? Maybe they are so preoccupied with others things in their life that they neglect certain things. I dunno. My dad when he was younger loved to play soccer. Now, he doesn't play anymore. I don't know how to swim. I wish I did. Maybe I'll learn this summer.
