Cat is the best for the working long hours kinda person :)
They prefer to be alone I think, give them some catnip, food, water and litter.. and a sunny spot to lay down.. thats their happy spot :)

As you probably know, all dogs do need some sort of social interaction throughout the day, but certain breeds are more compatible than others. A great dog to look into is a Flat-Coat retriever. DO NOT GET A PUPPY. Puppies need a lot of attention, and it sounds like you will not have the kind of time to properly love the animal as it deserves. Another possibility is a cat because they don't need as much interactions as dogs, but still can cuddle with you. Fish are cool too, but you still are going to have to clean the tank and feed the fish. I would reccomend that you go to the American Kennel Club Website, and find quizzes that show you the best dog breed for you lifestyle.

Well if you can't give a dog alot of attention DON'T get one. Dog's take an extreme amount of work and what if it had to go to the bathroom? If you work long hours you couldn't train it either, it would be into everything!! I agree with the one person, cat's are more likely to be alright while home alone. Also the only training you realy have to with a cat is to teach them where there litter box is and that it's for there restroom use. If you don't like cat's then fish would be perfect all you do with them is feed 'um and claen out there tank once in awhile.

No no no if you get two dogs to keep each other company you just end up having TWO dogs left alone at home!It doesn't work the same way for humans and for dogs! You should get a cat,but only if you have something like a backyard or at least a spacey apartment

No dog should be left alone all day if you are not home to spend time and interact with it then maybe you should get a more independent animal like a cat/kitten (or goldfish=P) As long as you can spend a few hours with her/him a smaller dog is better definatly no athletic/big dogs
Good LUCK=)

If you want a dog and plan on leaving it alone I hope you have a fenced yard for it to run and play where it will have access to plenty of water and shade. A grown shelter dog would appreciate a nice home like that. Otherwise a young dog will require all of your time and attention. If you can't give it both, please, please don't get a dog. Buy a goldfish. It won't be fair to the dog to bring it home and leave it all alone.

Get a cat. If you do not like cats, then I guess get a Chihuahua.
My friend has a Chihuahua that does very well when home alone... also, you could consider adopting a senior pet. An old homeless dog will be more than happy to have a home and wait for you to return all day.

Understanding how to train your dog and how to correct bad behaviours is very important. That's why I suggest to follow a good training course. There are plenty of books and training material. One online course I recommend (I like it because it has hundreds of videos) is http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=572
It helped me a lot.
