How to Check Validity of my XP Key?

How can I check an XP key is valid without going through the long hassle of trying to download an update or somesuch?

Open "My Computer" , click "Help" and then "Is This Copy Of Windows Legal?"

in windows explorer under help or the tab beside it, it says is this version of windows legal? click it and u'll know
